Today the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released a new draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) taking a new, harder look at development of oil shale and tar sands in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. The agency’s preferred alternative is a substantial improvement over their 2008 decision to open nearly 2 million acres of public lands to oil shale and tar sands development.

The BLM is initiating a planning process for the future of oil shale development in the
West, based on Secretary Salazar’s decision in February to take a fresh look at the oil
shale plan that was released in 2008, which opened up 2 million acres of western public
lands to oil shale.
